Auriculotherapy: The History
1500s BCE
The earliest known Chinese records display the use of the ear in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
400s BCE
Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, wrote of this type of treatment while in Egypt.
1950s CE
Auriculotherapy was advanced and systematized by the French neurologist Paul Nogier, M.D.
1959
The Nanking Ear Acupuncture research team under General Mao Tse Tung conducted a massive study which verified the clinical accuracy of Dr. Nogier’s work. Training of “barefoot doctors” ensued to apply this form of treatment to the masses.
1980
In the United States, the first double blind, controlled research study at UCLA by Dr. Terry Oleson statistically verified the accuracy of correctly diagnosing the location of musculoskeletal pain via the ear. The success of this study and subsequent studies leads to the formation of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) and the Auriculotherapy Certification Institute Board.
TODAY
An official White House physician, Col. Richard Niemtzow, MD, PhD, MPH, conducts ongoing Auriculotherapy research through his offices at the Pentagon and Walter Reed Hospital. His studies about the benefits of auricular treatment on Xerostomia (dry mouth) and pain disorders are presented at professional conferences around the world. Serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Medical Acupuncture and as a senior editor of The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Dr. Niemtzow also represents the Department of Defense on the National Institute of Health Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Advisory Board.
